| ULCH | Malawi - September 14 - October 3, 2006 | | Malawi! The Warm Heart of Africa!
Administrator Craig Wiester has prepared a Power Point slide show of about 115 frames. You can download it here. (It'll take 6 minutes or less on a DSL line, quite a bit more if you're using dial-up.) We were even written up in the March, 2008 issue of InterActs! You can read that article here!
All photos taken by Administrator Craig Wiester.
Abusa (Pastor) Kwanza Yu teaching the children under a tree outside the Lilongwe Lutheran Cathedral.
What the trip was all about – Solar Ovens! To save packing space, we carried 12 of them knocked down in large suitcases. Here Tim & Jerry assemble one.
It wasn’t all work; here Mike and Ruth draw a bead on a big elephant by the waters of the Shire river in the Liwonde National Park.
Driving out of the park, we hit a clearing and encountered this young male. He immediately turned to face us and the message was clear: Back Off! Our driver put the car into reverse right away, giving this guy the assurance that we were no threat. He decided we weren’t, and turned into the bush.
Oh, the choirs! At all the dozen or so rural churches we visited, we were always welcomed by the most magnificent choirs! Mike & Ruth managed to record some of their joyous music; download a brief music video here!
In Zomba women cook Nsima, the national comfort food. It’s essentially milled corn with all the healthy parts removed. It provides only a single nutrient, starch. It does, however, fill your belly, so you think you’re being well fed.
Our transportation for the 2000 or so kilometers we put on while in Malawi. One person rode up front with the driver, 3 in the back seat, and 4 in the side-facing seats in the rear. Nice that we were all friends!
Members of a rural church, seen in the background. The church building consists of vertical sticks holding up a plastic tarp. These people are trying to raise resources to build a real building. Note the child, 3rd from the left. He is probably suffering from either malnutrition or parasites.
Here's a mosquito net, tied up for the day. Prior to sleep, we'd untie the nets and drape them over all 4 corners of our bed. Cheap and effective!
A Solar Oven demonstration behind a church in Blantyre, Malawi’s largest city.
Communion celebration in Blantyre. Our pastor Kwanza Yu preached the sermon (with the help of a Chichewa interpreter) and assisted in serving Holy Communion.
You think Kwanza doesn’t rock? Check this out! Here’s Abusa (Pastor) Kwanza Yu along with the Dean of the Blantyre Cathedral and the Pastor swaying to the music of the choirs, who continue singing as everyone leaves after the 3 hour-10 minute service.
So poor, but so beautiful! Here is a group of women in Madisi preparing to participate in Communion. Wonderful fabrics!
Saying good bye to our intrepid driver, Odar. Odar was always cheerful, always taking on another task without grumbling, and safe and cautious as he drove us around The Warm Heart of Africa, Malawi!
